Obituary

"Tired of Life" - Sad end of a Commercial Traveller - A distressing occurrence was investigated by the Coroner for West Sussex (Mr F.W. Butler) on Monday afternoon, when he conducted an inquiry into the death of Arthur James Lane, aged 56, a commercial traveller, of 5, Queen's Road. The inquest took place at the house. Alfred George Sellock, brother-in-law of Mr Lane, said that the deceased had not been in good health for some time, and had been attended by Dr Le Riche. He had been troubled with his head since an operation. On New Year's Eve Mr Lane was taken ill with vomiting, and he said that he had taken "some hat cleaning stuff". He had been depressed about himself on account of his health, and the pain in his head had caused him to say that he was tired of life. Dr Philip John Le Riche said he had attended Mr Lane for years; he suffered from pains in his head and sleeplessness. The cause of the pains was obscure, although he had consulted several specialists. They had tried several drugs. Witness saw him on December 31st, when he told witness that he had taken some salts of lemon (oxalic acid). The acid had a corrosive action on the mucus membrane of the stomach. The patient gradually became weaker, and necrosis of the mucus membrane was the cause of death. "Suicide whilst temporarily of unsound mind" was the verdict recorded by the Coroner.
