Life story

Amelia Juliet Barnes was born in Brighton in 1820, her father was William Barnes, 23yrs, Auctioneer, her mother, Juliet, 18yrs, nee Hendricks. 

She married Richard Frederick Bankes, 28yrs, Mariner, on 28th January 1850 at Old Church, St. Pancras. Their daughter, Amelia Juliet, was born in 1850 in Brighton,  the family lived at 52, Grand Parade, and in July 1852, Richard, no longer in the merchant navy, successfully applied for an alehouse licence. 

In October 1854, Richard appeared at Lewes County Court under the Insolvent Debtors Act, brought by a wine and spirits merchant, but after a lengthy examination, he was discharged. They remained living in Brighton, where Amelia's father, William, also lived. 

Amelia was widowed in 1868 when Richard died, aged just 46yrs. The following year, her daughter, Amelia Juliet, married a medical student, in Camberwell, and Amelia took up residence with her daughter in London. 

In 1883, her daughter was also widowed when her husband, Thomas Lidbetter, died aged 35yrs, and in 1891, Amelia, her daughter and five grandchildren, were living in Worthing at 5, Queen's Road, where Amelia died, aged 77yrs, on 17th March 1897.
