Life story

Life story

The Jamieson family had a strong military background. Alister's mother, Anne Mackintosh, married General James William Henry Jamieson, Indian Army, in 1831 at her home town of Inverness. Alister was born in Bengal on 8 March 1847 and baptised at Ludhiana on 22 March. He began his military career at about the age of 19 at the Royal Military School, Sandhurst in 1864 as a Gentleman Cadet and was commissioned in 1866. Eventually, he joined the Indian Army Staff Corps and served in Bengal reaching the rank of Colonel. On 24 July 1873 he married Geraldine Alice DAguilar at Simla, Bengal. They had a son , Gerald Alister, and two daughters, Inez and Sheila Alice, all born in India. Gerald became a soldier. He married Ruth Cobbold, the daughter of the Rev. Cobbold, Chaplain to the Indian Government. In 1916, he died of wounds received at Mesopotamia. Both daughters married soldiers. Inez became the wife of Major-General Sir Jocelyn Percy and Sheila married Lt. Col. Alfred Hutton Radice DSC. When Alister retired to England he lived at Fairstowe, Lyncombe, Bath, Somerset and St. Kilda, Hewlett Road, in Cheltenham, before coming to Arden, Shakespeare Road, Worthing, where he died on 20 July 1924.
