Alice Norah Godden was born in Westhampnett, Sussex, in October 1914. Her father was John Newall Godden, a bricklayer, and her mother, Bertha Lily, nee White, they married in 1912 and lived in Tarring, Worthing. Alice had a sister, Annie L., born 1913.
Alice's grandparents, John Newall Godden, bricklayer, and Alice Annie had 8 children, her father, John (jr.) was the eldest, two of his brothers fought in the Great War, Charles Vere Godden was killed in action at the battle of the Somme, 1916, Edgar Godden died from wounds, 1917, they are commemorated on the War Memorial plaque in St. Botolph's Church.
Alice Norah died, aged 14yrs, on 29th October 1929, at 1, Elm Terrace, Tarring Road. She had been named after her grandmother, Alice, and on 1st November 1929, the day of Alice Norah's funeral, her grandmother also died, aged 66yrs.
Norah's death certificate gave the cause of death as 1.a) Pulmonary Phthisis b) Exhaustion.
