Life story

Life story

Edward  Henry was born in London, son of Edward and Jane. He was baptised at St Andrew's, Holborn on 4th May 1834. His father was a cheesemonger.

In 1851, Edward Senior and Jane were living in High Holborn with Edward Henry and his sisters Elizabeth and Mary. They had also a General Servant and an Errand Boy.

Argentine was the daughter of the Rev Edward Wilton who was Vicar of Maddington, in Wiltshire, and Ann. Edward studied at Queens College Cambridge, and was ordained in 1820. As a Curate he was also Headmaster of West Lavington Grammar School. At the time of his death, in 1871, he was Chaplain to William Carnegie, 8th  Earl of Northesk, and Master of the Free School.

Edward was born in 1797 and there was an Argentine Wilton, born in Wiltshire in 1804, so I am assuming that they were brother and sister and 'our' Argentine was named for her Aunt.

In 1851, aged 14, Argentine was a pupil at St Mary's Hall School in 'Brighthelmstone'. The rest of her family were living in West Lavington.

Rev Wilton married Edward and Argentine in West Lavington, Wiltshire in 1860. They had 8 witnesses.

In 1861 the couple were living at 6 Craven Place, in Paddington, with two Household Servants.  They went on to have 3 children, Edward Wilton, (born 1863, died1896), Ernest (born 1867, died 1895) and Arthur, (born 1868, but didn't outlive his Mother).

In 1871 the family was living in Paddington. There were also a Shopman and 3 Servants. In 1881, Argentine was living in Craven Road, with son Edward, a Housemaid and a Cook. Edward was staying at Holywood House in Lower Beeding, Sussex.

By 1891 the couple were living at the Beeches in Tower Road, Lower Beeding. Edward was now described as a Merchant, and they had 2 Domestic Servants, both born in Sussex.

In 1901, at Cheverel in Heene Road, Edward was described as a Grocer. He was living  with a Housekeeper and a House Maid, also son Arthur, married in Heene, to Alice (Bathard).

Edward died in 1905 at Cheverel, Heene Road, but his address was given as 42 Craven Road, Paddington.
