Life story

Life story

Thomas Spence Hawks was born in Rotherhithe, Surrey, on 4th December 1828, he was baptised on 2nd January 1829 at St. Mary's, Rotherhithe. He was the son of Edward Hawks, Shipbuilder, 42yrs, and Susanna Brewman Spence, 28yrs. In 1844 Thomas's father died and the family moved to Hertfordshire.

In 1846 Thomas joined the East India Army and on 26th August 1857, he married Julia Harriet Bate, 19yrs, in Rangoon, West Bengal, India. Over the next 20yrs, Thomas and Harriet had 11 children, 1 son died in infancy.

Thomas and his family returned to England c1880 and lived in Beckenham, Kent, he held the rank of Army Colonel; he was promoted to Major General in 1886, Lt. General in 1892, and finally, General in 1894.

In 1891 they lived in Cheltenham, Gloucester, and in 1901 they were in Guildford, Surrey; at some point Thomas and Julia moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Holcombe House, Heene Road. Thomas died on 2nd December 1905, aged 76yrs, at 99, Marine Parade, Worthing, probate was granted to his widow, effects £1319 1s 0d. Value 2021 - £168K.

Army and Navy Gazette Saturday 9th December 1905.

 

Gen. Thomas Spence Hawks, unemployed supernumerary list, Indian Army, died at Holcombe House, Heene Road, Worthing, on the 2nd inst., aged 77. He entered the East India Army as Ensign Feb. 5, 1846, was posted to the 37th Madras Native Infantry in the following June, and promoted to Lieutenant, March 16, 1853, and to Captain, Dec. 21, 1859. He was appointed to the Madras Staff Corps Feb. 18, 1861, and was promoted to Major, Feb. 5, 1866; Lieutenant- Colonel, Feb. 5, 1872; Colonel, Feb. 5, 1877, and was placed on the unemployed supernumerary list Dec. 5, 1886, being advanced to the rank of Major-General, Dec. 20, 1886; Lieutenant-General, Jan. 3, 1891; and General, April 1, 1894. In 1868 he commanded the Keonjhur Cuttack Expedition.
