Life story

Life story

Edith's father, Capt. Edward Burnie, was a master mariner and surveyor to Lloyd's Register, who was stationed in Hong Kong with his wife Janet nee Inglis. He died in 1900 and is buried in Happy Valley, Hong Kong Island. He left £5683 13s 6d. Census records for the years before 1900 could not be found but Janet and several of her children, though not Edith, were in the 1901 census living at 46 Westmoreland Road, Beckenham, Kent. Edith did not marry and her whereabouts are traced chiefly through the electoral registers. In the 1921 census, she was living with her mother and William Henry Inglis in a large establishment including people with overseas connections, in Cromwell Road, Kensington. The electoral registers tell us that in 1932, Edith was living with Rosalie Maud Ball in Windsor. In 1939, she was part of a large household at 1 St Michael's Road, Worthing, but by 1946, was alone at Maryland, Windsor. By 1953, she was with Dorothy Anne Stewart Inglis at 33 Moor Park Road, Ruislip. She was living at 22 Selden Road, Worthing when she died on 1st August 1956. Probate was granted on 5th November to John Basil Lewis bank official and Helene Jeanette Archeson-Gray married woman. Effects £12632 3s 4d. Re-sealed Hong Kong 2nd May 1957.

John Basil Lewis was the son of Alice Mary nee Burnie, Edith's sister and Ernest John Lewis. Helene Jeanette Archeson-Gray nee Burnie was Edith's niece.
