Curates and assistant vicars played an important role in assisting the rectors of Heene. For the curates it was often their first role after ordination and it was essentially a training role where they learnt from the rector all his duties and probably carried out their first christenings, marriages and funerals. However, some of the curates at Heene took the role prior to retirement or following illness after previously fulfilling the full role of vicar or rector.

Rev. David Jenks 1891 -1892
David Jenks, the son of cabinet maker, Robert Jenks and his wife, Sarah Francis, was born in Stockwell London in 1865. He had four brothers: William, Edward, John and Walter. David was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, matriculating in October 1885 and graduating in 1888 and gaining an M.A. in 1892.
David was the curate at St. Botolph's from 1891 to 1892. The first funeral he officiated at was that of Stephen Streeter, a 7 week old baby.
He left Heene to take part in a foreign service mission to Assyrian Christians. By 1911 he was the head of Kelham College in Nottinghamshire.
David died on 22nd March,1935, at Kelham.

Rev Robert Eckett 1893 - 1895 was born on 8th August 1864 to Henry and Louisa Eckett in Crouch End, Middlesex.
Educated at King's College London, he matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford in 1884, gaining a B.A. in 1888 and an M.A. in 1892. His first curacy was at Ottershaw Surrey, before joining the clergy at St. Botolph's in 1893.
The first funeral the Rev. Robert Eckett officiated at in Heene, was that of Ferdinand Hedworth Williamson who was buried on 5th January 1893.
N last position was as Junior Canon at Hereford Cathedral. He died on 16th June 1936 while living at the Cloisters, Hereford Cathedral.

Rev. Harold Lascelles 1900-1905
Harold Lascelles was born on 18 August 1873 near Petworth, Sussex, to clergyman, Rowley Lascelles and his wife Emma Collyer. Harold went to Marlborough School and graduated from St. John's College, Oxford in 1895.
He married Rosalie Landmann on 28 December 1898 in Graffham, Sussex. They had three children: Harold Rowley, Mary Rosalie Emma and John Harold. Harold was born in Graffam in 1899, Mary was born in Heene, 1905 and John in the USA in 1915.
He was curate at Heene from 1900 to 1905 and the family emigrated to the United States in 1914. He died in June 1956 in Orange, Florida, USA, at the age of 82.
Frederick Charles Bland 1902 -1905
Frederick Charles Bland was born on 16 June 1861 in Snaresbrook, Essex, to Francis Bland and his wife Agatha. He graduated from Corpus Christi, Cambridge in 1889.
He married Agnes Hicks on 1 July 1890 in Surrey. They had three children: Emily Nesta, Charles Edward and Janet Ursula.
While working as a curate at Heene he officiated at the burial of Robert Todd Nicholls on April 18th,1904
He died on 19 November 1920 in Worthing, Sussex, at the age of 59.
Rev. Louis Swire Blenkins 1906 - 1928

Rev Cuthbert Bertram Thomas Pennington 1911 - 1917
Cuthbert Bertram Thomas Pennington was born on 16 August 1877 in Willesborough, Kent, to the rector of St. Clement Danes, John James Septimus Horatio Sparrow Pennington and his wife Sarah Anne Harding. He had 9 siblings several of whom became clergymen.
Cuthbert was educated at Clare College, Cambridge where he graduated with a B.A. in 1902 and an M.A. in 1908. After ordination Cuthbert took on a few curacies before becoming curate of Heene. C. of Heene, Sussex in 1911. During his curacy he married Edith Massie Berry, a merchant's daughter, at Heene Parish Church on 14th June 1914. The couple had no children. Cuthbert officiated at the funeral of Louie Whitehead on 13th February 1913.
He left Heene to take up the role of Rector of Ovingdean from 1918-48. His final post was at Worthing, Sussex, in 1952. His death was recorded on 4th April 1960 at the age of 82.
Rev Arthur Douglas Pierpoint 1917 - 1918
Arthur Douglas Pierpoint was born in 1861 in the Isle of Man to his clergyman father, Matthew Augustin Pierpoint and his wife Emily Jane Statham.
Arthur started out working as an actor and married actress, Fanny Pierpoint on 10 April 1884 at St. George, Hanover Square, London. Their son, Mathew Arthur Pierpoint, was born in 1885. Their marriage broke down in 1887 when according to the 1902 newspaper report, "Mr. Arthur Douglas Pierpoint, an actor, was in the Divorce Court, to-day, granted a divorce on the ground or the adultery of his wife, Fanny Merton Pierpoint, an actress. In 1887 both .parties were out of engagements, and respondent left her huaband, stating she intended to get an engagement. She afterwards refused to return to him, and it was stated later took rooms in London, where she passed as a clergyman's widow, and was visited by two gentlemen."
Arthur became ordained into the church in 1902 and after a brief spell as curate at Heene in he became assistant chaplain at Holloway prison.
Arthur died in December 1932 in Hendon, Middlesex, at the age of 71.
