More extensive information on flowering plants can be found in a separate blog post.

B. Asters (ASTERACEAE or COMPOSITAE)

This is one of the largest worldwide flowering plant families and is well represented in the UK. The name Compositae refers to the clustering of the flowers (called florets) into compact heads, so that an entire cluster represents a single 'flower'. They also have one-seeded fruits called achenes.

C. Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica)

Although this is a native plant, the specimen in the cemetery was introduced. The creamy disc florets have white rays and appear from July. The species name is from the Greek for 'sneeze' and indicates a belief that the plant causes sneezing. A tea made from the dried root was used to treat joint and muscle pain, toothache, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, intestinal gas, tiredness, urinary tract problems, and loss of appetite.
