The Grass Moth family are typified by their adopting folded postures on grass stems. They are sometimes classed as a type of Snout-moth because of their distinctive appearance.

C. Rush Veneer Moth (Nomophila noctuella)

The Rush Veneer Moth has an elongated shape at rest, with a wingspan of 25 - 30 millimetres. Its mottled colouring and distinctive shape make it relatively easy to identify. The outer fringe of its wings can be both dark and pale.

The larvae of this moth feed on Clover and different grasses.

This species of moth is a well-known migrant, and the county recorder for lepidoptera informed us that large numbers of these moths had migrated into West Sussex during August 2022, the month when we photographed this species in the Cemetery.
