B. Bedstraws (RUBIACEAE)

This is a huge worldwide family, whose main characteristic is the way the leaves are arranged in whorls around the stems.

C. Lady's Bedstraw (Galium verum)

The yellow flowers of this native plant are a lovely sight on the Downs in June. The Bedstraws are a source of red, orange, and yellow dyes, and extracts from the plant are also used in the treatment of kidney stones and urinary diseases. Infusions of bedstraws were used for curdling milk when rennet was not available for cheese-making.
