B. Maples and Horse Chestnut (SAPINDACEAE)

Known also as the Soapberry family, many members contain mildly toxic saponins with soap-like qualities.

C. Field Maple (Acer campestre)

This native tree is slow-growing, and the hard wood is valued for lathe-turned articles, joinery and woodcarving. Field Maple wood is favoured for violin cases.

The sap is sweet and sugary, and used as a flavouring and to make syrup.
