B. Docks (POLYGONACEAE)

This large family has many familiar members with swollen stem nodes; hence the alternative name knotweeds. There is a characteristic sheath at the leaf base forming a tube around the stem, the ochrea.

C. Broad-leaved Dock (Rumex obtusifolius)

The lower leaves are heart-shaped at the base. This dock flowers from June. The juice of this and other docks was used to cure boils; or the leaves were boiled and the gelatinous liquid remaining was used.
