Life story

Life story

Winifred was born in Portslade, the daughter of Edward George and Mary Ann. Her father died in 1898. Mary Ann worked in the local laundry as an ironer.

By 1911, Winfred was living with her brother Henry and his family and working in the local laundry.

On 9th October 1915, Winifred married Percy Hazell at Heene Church. Their son Percy Bernard was born on 29th August 1918. Percy Snr was serving in France at the time and after suffering from influenza, he was discharged on 20th December.

The family lived at 78 The Drive and Percy worked for Worthing Corporation as a foreman in their macadam works. On 2nd October 1928, Percy fell through the roof of the Corporation's Destructor Works and was taken to hospital. He died there on 20th October. Winifred and her son continued to live at 78 The Drive until her death on 6th March 1932. Probate was granted on 24th May to Daniel John Alfred Braden stoker and Frederick Reginald Parsons builder. Effects £380 15s 4d.

Mary Ann Braden and her son William (Winifred's brother) are also buried at Heene.
