Life story

Life story

Winifred was born in Tottenham, Middlesex, the daughter of Francis and Anne Matilda. She was baptised at St Ann's Church, Tottenham on 29th January 1876. Winifred was one of four sisters who all became teachers. Her father, Francis was a Professor of  Mathematics at the City of London School. He died suddenly in 1889. The family lived at 89 Lordship Park, Stoke Newington from the early 1880's until late 1939. Winifred studied at Bedford College, part of the University of London. In 1899 she gained a BA in Arts and Logic. She taught at a local secondary school and continued to live with her widowed mother and siblings. By 1939, Winifred had retired and was in poor health. She moved to Worthing, living at 24 Mill Road but died on 10th November 1940. Probate was granted on 7th February 1941 to Lionel Mould Gurney Cuthbertson analytical chemist and Oswald Victor Baldwin solicitor. Effects £644 10s 6d.
