Life story

Life story

Winifred Annie, the second child of Walter Fogwill, a clothier's manager, and his wife, Georgina, nee Emery, was baptised on 28 September 1884 at St. John the Evangelist in Wandsworth. In 1891 the family was living at 10, Ferndale Road, Lambeth.

On 28 June 1913 Winifred married Alan Raikes Bee, an officer in the Army, at St John, Clapham, Surrey. Their son, Derek Alan Raikes,  born in 1916 in Essex, joined the RAF, died in action and was buried at El Alemain in 1942.

From at least 1924 Winifred and Alan lived at Ellington,9, Cowper Road, Worthing. Winifred  also had a house 4, St Botolphs Road, Worthing. She was  widowed in 1927 and  died on 24 September 1946 at the County Hospital, Dorking Road, Epsom, Surrey.

Mentioned in her probate announcement are Miss Margaret Elinor  Jones, (who could not be traced), Miss  Fogwill, ( the daughter of Walter W Fogwill, Winifred's brother), and Miss Joyce Ellen Purnell ( the daughter of Nora Kathleen Jean Bee, the sister of Alan Raikes Bee, who married Charles Arthur Purnell). In 1939, a James A W Purnell, a dental student, lived in Cowper Road with Winifred, Derek Alan and Margaret E Jones.
