He was baptised at Hove on 16 Nov 1879. William's father was a journeyman baker, so the family moved around Sussex for work, eventually settling in Worthing. William never married and lived with his parents and later his sister Annie Florence. He started out as a plumber, later becoming a house painter. In 1914, William enlisted in 4th Royal Sussex Regiment Reserve Battalion. He is described as being 5ft 2ins tall with brown eyes and dark hair. He served as a reservist Lance Corporal until 20 Jun 1916. He was then discharged for re-enlistment for general service. His address was given as 3 Brunswick Road, Worthing. After his father's death, William moved in with his sister's family at 8 Thorn Road. In 1940, William slipped off a pavement in Montague Street and fractured his left thigh. He was operated on at Southlands but infection set in. He died c14th Mar.
