Life story

William Proctor Robertson, jnr, was the son of William Proctor , snr, a miller, and Charlotte, nee Squires. He was born on 11 May 1848 at Eaton in Norfolk. He joined the Metropolitan Police Force at Old Scotland Yard on 19 June 1876 and served as a police constable in C and V divisions and as Sergeant in T division. His weekly wage was £2 2s. When he retired on 19 September 1901 after 25 years 89 days service he was entitled to a yearly pension of £67 18s 9d. William married a widow, Mary Ann Ayling, nee Johnson, on 4 October 1879 at St George's Hanover Square. They had no children, She died in 1884 and William married Mary Elizabeth Cooper on 13 October 1885. They had four daughters with somewhat pretentious names. Mary Grace Gwendoline b1887, Ethel Gladys b 1889, Elizabeth Hyacinth Elfreda b 1890 and Constance Clementine b 1892. At the time he retired William was described as 53 years old and 5 7 ¾ tall with grey hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion. By 1911, he , his wife, and two of their daughters were living at 14, Milton Street, Worthing. When he died in 1935 his address was still Milton Street but at no. 18. His wife had died in 1929 so he left his effects of £625 16s to be administered by his daughter, Mary G G Robertson.
