William Ransome was born in Bethnal Green, London, in 1864; he was the youngest child of John Ransome, 39yrs, and Susanna, 37yrs, nee Cato, both born in Norfolk. William had 4 siblings, Elizabeth b.1846, Emma b. 1849, Munn b.1851, and Robert b.1852.

William’s first census record is in 1891, he was a 28yr old widower, living with his brother’s family in Peckham, working as a commercial traveller. In 1901, William was still residing with his brother, Munn, and was a merchant, dealing in India Rubber. At some point in his career William founded the Bristol branch of the East London Rubber Company, the large and well-known firm of cycle and motor factors.

In 1905, aged 42yrs, William married Jane Forebeck Bryant, 33yrs, at West Ham, Essex, they had 2 children, Phyllis F. in 1907, and Reginald M. in 1911, both born in Worthing, Sussex, where the family lived at Lindisfarne, Grand Avenue.

William died in Worthing, on 12th April 1920, aged 56yrs, probate was granted to John Llywellan Jones, merchant, effects £32539 4s 1d. Value 2022 – £1.5m.

We regret to announce the death of Mr. William Ransome, the founder of the Bristol branch of the East London Rubber Company, the large and well-known firm of cycle and motor factors. During Mr. Ransome’s business activities in Bristol he made many friends, who will no doubt be sorry to hear of the passing away of yet another of our grand old business school. When a young man he was a keen racing cyclist and took an interest in cycling and motoring affairs after he came to Bristol.
