Life story

Life story

William was born in Wisborough Green, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann. He was baptised in the village on 5th October 1856. Thomas was an agricultural labourer and the family lived on a farm in Skiff Lane. By 1871, the family were living in East Harting. For a while, William worked on a coaster out of Newhaven but came back to Sussex to work as a gardener and fruit grower. On 12 June 1886, a daughter Lillie Henrietta was born in Rackham to Agnes Matilda Smith who married William later in the year. Lillie was baptised at Amberley and her mother was listed as a "single woman" in the parish register. The family moved to Worthing, living in a cottage in Manor Road, south of Heene Cemetery. In 1890, Agnes gave birth to a son, William. On 12th January 1892, William Snr. died. He had been suffering from influenza for nearly two weeks but this turned into pneumonia. No probate.

Agnes married William's brother Ebenezer in 1893. He lived in St Michael's Road and also worked as a gardener. She died aged 99 in 1961.
