Life story

William Powell was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on 13th December 1851. His father, William Powell, Snr. 28yrs, was a Mercer, (dealer in fine cloth), his mother, Ann, 26yrs. He had 5 siblings, Jane b.1853, Ann b.1857, Mary b.1858, Elizabeth b.1860, John b.1864.

William 19yrs in 1871 was described as Mercer's son, no occupation. In 1898 William was admitted to the Holloway Sanatorium, also known as Virginia Water Asylum.

In 1901, William, retired draper, and his parents, were living with his married sister, Jane Blackmore in Wales. In 1902, aged 50yrs, William married Mary Jane Eccleston, 49yrs, at Atcham, Shropshire, and by 1911 they had moved to Worthing, living at Haughmond, West Avenue.

On 14th October 1920, William was admitted to Graylingwell Hospital, the West Sussex County Asylum, Chichester, as a private patient, suffering from melancholia, he died there on 2nd February 1928, aged 75yrs.

Probate was granted to Edward Percy Everest, barrister-at-law, effects £21553 4s 11d.  Value 2021 - £1.3m.
