Life story

Life story

William was born in Stanwick, Northants, the son of William Douglas and Mary Ann. He was baptised in the village on 24 Mar. William's father was a baker and grocer. He'd run the bakery since the early 1840's and was a founder member of the Parish Council.

William didn't follow his father into the business but instead trained in the brewing industry and became an agent. In 1897 William was initiated into the Freemasons at Wellingborough.

In 1901 he married Nellie Corby at All Hallows church, Wellingborough. They had no children. By 1909 the couple were living at "The Gables" in Queen's Road, Worthing.

William's father died in Christchurch, Hants in 1911. William died at "The Gables" on 4 Jun 1912. Cause of death was given as "delirium tremens 7 days and hypostatic congestion of the lungs". Probate was granted on 22 Aug to Nelly his widow. Effects £1256 11s 11d. It was re-sworn as £1319 15s 11d (approx. £103K in 2020).
