Life story

Life story

William was born in Marylebone, Middlesex, the son of Henry and Rachel. His father was a pianoforte maker and William followed him into the family business. On 31st August 1867, William married Catherine Woodgate at St Marylebone church. The couple moved into the Woodgate house in Boscobel Place, Marylebone. They shared the house with Catherine's widowed mother, her son William and her son-in-law's family the Aberdeen's. This situation continued for well over ten years. By 1891, William and Catherine had moved to Streatham with their nine children. They were in order of birth, Agnes, Kate, Harry Frank, Florence, Herbert, William, Harold, John and Walter. All survived to adulthood. By 1901, William had transferred the business to his sons Harold and Walter and had taken up the post of secretary of the United Friends Perpetual Benefit Building Society. William had retired by 1911, so the family moved to Worthing, living in Valencia Road. Catherine died on 27th April 1913 and was buried at Heene. William moved to "Ardmore" 4 Rugby Road, Worthing. He died here on 10th February 1925. Probate was granted on 10th March to Harry Frank Joynes estate manager and Herbert William Joynes surveyor. Effects £2914 0s 8d.
