Life story

Life story

William was born in Bangalore, Madras, India, the son of Major General Nicholas Fenwick Johnson and his wife Bridget Mary (known as Mary). He was baptised in Bangalore on 21st November 1836. William followed his father into the army and by 1855 was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Marines Light Infantry. On 3rd July 1856, he married Annie Bulman, the daughter of a chemist, at St John's Church, Preston, Lancashire. William returned to India and served during the Indian Mutiny. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1858. His father died in India in 1861. William was again promoted in 1867 to 2nd Captain. By 1871, William and Annie were living in Hampshire with two of their nieces. On 1st January 1879, William retired from the army with the title of Honorary Major. He and Annie were then living at St George's Villas, Auckland Road, Southsea. For a while the couple lived in Streatham, then at 9 Elmfield Road, Upper Tooting in 1887. By 1889, William and Annie were living on the Isle of Wight, firstly in Ryde and then in St Helen's. A further move to Poole followed then a final journey to Sussex where the couple settled in Horsham, living at 26 Rusper Road. Annie died here on 3rd September 1906. William moved to Worthing in 1909 to live with his sisters Henriette and Alice in Heene Road. His other sister Mary died here on 5th March 1909 and was buried at Heene. William died on 28th April 1911. Probate was granted on 24th May to Henriette Eliza Johnson and Alice Johnson spinsters. Effects £154 0s 3d.
