Life story

Life story

William was born in Woolwich, Kent, the son of William and Rachel. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene church, Woolwich on 11th September 1851. His father was a gardener and William followed him into this trade. In July 1874, William married Mary Ann Shipp at Freeebridge Lynn in Norfolk. Mary Ann came from Castle Rising. The couple settled in Sunninghill in Berkshire where William worked as a gardener. By 1884, they had moved to Worthing, living at Athelstan Villas in Canterbury Road. William ran his own business as a nurseryman and fruit grower at "The Rosery" in Mill Road. Daughter Violet Adelaide Dorothy was born on 8th October 1890 but died on 2nd December. She was buried at Heene. William and Mary moved to "The Briars" in Salvington Road, Worthing before 1901. William died on 1st March 1907 after a long illness. No probate. Mary returned to her home in Norfolk and died there in 1924.
