Obituary

Obituary: Dr William John Harris Worthing Gazette 30 Aug 1893 It is with deep regret that we are called upon to report the death of Mr William John Harris who had been for many years in practice in Worthing as a medical man. For several years, the deceased had suffered from paralysis consequent on an operation and was recently attacked by typhoid, to which he succumbed at his residence, Church House, Heene on Monday at the age of 55 years, leaving a widow and one son to mourn his loss. He was attended by Mr A H Collet (former partner). A member of the Royal College of Surgeons, he was regarded as a skilful practitioner and highly esteemed by his many patients. He was for several years in practice with his father who still survives. His failing health compelled him to relinquish his practice two years ago, since when he has been practically an invalid. For a considerable time Mr Harris was Senior Medical Officer at The Infirmary, afterwards appointed Honorary Consulting Surgeon. For nine years Mr Harris occupied a seat on the late Local Board and had the distinction of being elected to the Chairmanship for eight years. On the occasion of his retirement in April 1886, he was publicly presented with a claret jug and beakers together with an illuminated address. He was a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and his observations were recorded regularly in the Worthing Gazette. Mr Harris was also chairman of The Worthing Pier Co. and also of The Athletic Sports Committee. Mr Harris was a very generous supporter of various charities and it can with truth be said that Worthing can ill afford to lose him.
