Life story

Life story

William was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the son of William and Elizabeth. He was baptised at St John's Church, Newcastle on 13th September 1829. The family lived in Newgate Street and William Snr was a spirit merchant. By 1832, the family had moved to Strawberry Place in the city. In 1849, William travelled to Australia on the Scotia. He kept a diary of his voyage which is now held in the National Library of Australia. William set up a business as a merchant in Sydney and over the next few decades, travelled to and from Australia regularly. On 13th March 1854, William married Mary Hogg at St James Church, Shilbottle, Northumberland. Mary travelled with William to Australia and in 1862, she gave birth to a daughter Emily in Sydney. Their son John was born in Sydney in 1864. By 1867, William and Mary were back in England where Mary gave birth to Margaret in Marylebone, London. The family had moved to Worthing by 1881, living in Heene Terrace and then moving to "Laerdal" in Shelley Road. Mary died on 18th January 1886 and was buried at Shilbottle with her parents.  William died at "Laerdal" on 12th November 1888. Probate was granted on 8th December 1888 to Thomas Benfield Harbottle, Henry Robert Ray and Thomas Hovell Atkins Esquires. Effects £40859 15s 10d.
