Life story

Life story

William Job Grant was born in Ramsgate, Kent, c1821. His parents were, Stephen Hills Grant, 35yrs, Mariner, and Sarah Grant, 35yrs. William was baptised on 2nd January 1825, at St. Lawrence in Thanet. He had a brother, David, possibly a twin, and at the age of 15yrs, David was apprenticed to a carpenter, and William was apprenticed to a cordwainer (shoemaker).

On 23rd December 1849, William married Eliza Maxted Watson, at St. Mark, Myddleton Square, Islington. William was now a boot and shoemaker, in 1851 they lived in Clerkenwell, and their daughter, Mary Eliza, was born. They had 2 sons, William Job, born in 1855 in Thanet, and John, born in 1858 in Margate, Kent. By 1861 the family were living in Broadwater, Worthing, where William continued his trade as a boot and shoemaker until his death in January 1887, aged 66yrs.
