Life story

Life story

William was born in Islington, the son of Frederick Fitz Henry (Fred) Fisher and his wife Henriette. His father was very wealthy owning several properties. He also owned several racehorses, winning amongst others  the Goodwood Cup and Stewards Cup. William was sent to a local private school to learn English, classics, music, French and drawing but his main love was science. His mother Henriette died in 1857. Five years later Frederick married Margaret Hepzibah Pickering. By 1871, William was a science undergraduate and after graduating took up teaching. He married Emma Smith at Easton on the Hill, Northants on 11th January 1877. Emma had been a servant in his father's house in Islington. William's father died in 1879 leaving him a legacy and a trust fund. William and Emma moved to Birkenhead and then to Handsworth in Staffordshire, where William accepted a post as science master at Aston Grammar School. He stayed for 27 years. On retiring, William and Emma moved to Worthing in 1913, settling at "Landour" 14 Winchester Road. William died on 26th August 1924. Probate was granted to Emma Fisher widow. Effects £2963 15s 6d.
