Life story

William Henry Evans was born in St. George in the East, Middlesex, in 1858. He had four older siblings, Eliza 7yrs, Charles 6yrs, John 4yrs, and Thomas 3yrs, a younger brother, Henry, was born in 1860. His father was Charles Evans, 54yrs, his mother, Susan, 39, a Laundress. The family lived at 36, Tarling Street, St. George in the East, Middlesex. In 1871, when William was 13yrs and his brother, Thomas, 15yrs, they were both employed as Ginger Beer Makers and their father was a Greengrocer. In 1880, aged 23yrs, William married Charlotte Martha Cross, 28yrs, in Stepney. He was a Letter Carrier and Shoemaker, they lived at 81, Clark Street, Mile End, Old Town, Middlesex. William and Charlotte had 3 sons, Henry W. 1882, Elias G. 1883, and Ernest A. 1897, by 1891, William was a 1st Class Postman, the family lived at Seal Street, Hackney. In 1896 Charlotte died, aged 44yrs. In 1909, William, aged 52yrs, married Florence Owen, a widowed schoolteacher aged 40yrs, with a 14yr old daughter. By 1911 William had retired from the Post Office and they lived at 32, Urswick Road, Hackney. At some stage, after 1911, William and Florence moved to Sussex where they lived at Graigwen, 17, Reigate Road, Worthing. William Henry Evans died at Worthing Hospital on 4th March 1930, aged 72yrs.
