Life story

William Archard Evans was born in St. Clears, Carmarthen in 1858, he was baptised on 27th October. His father was The Reverend William Maurice Evans, Curate of Llandowror, his mother was Mary Anne, aka Marianne, nee James. William was 8yrs in 1867 when his father died. In 1883, on June 8th, William was awarded his Master's Certificate in the Merchant Service. In 1885, he married Lydia Davies, 23yrs, in Swansea. William Archard Evans had a successful career in the Merchant Service, becoming Master of the British steamship, Monmouthshire and was away from his wife and family for long periods. In 1899, in Hong Kong, he was part of a Marine Court of Enquiry into the loss of the British steamship Glenavon which foundered off the port of Hong Kong in 1898. The report was published by Lloyd's Register, London. In 1911, William, 52yrs, now a retired Master Mariner, lived with Lydia, 48yrs, at 179, Kings Road, Kingston Hill, Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey. According to the census, they had had 3 children but only one had survived. Although still living in Kingston, William died in Worthing on 5th April 1921, at Groombridge, Chaucer Road, aged 63yrs.
