Life story

Life story

William George Diaper was born in Lambeth, London, on 23 July 1903 and was baptised at St Andrew's, Lambeth, on 20 August. His father, also called William George, was a warehouse porter in a perfumery. His mother was Ellen, nee Warner. William became a pupil at Hartfield Street School on 3 September 1906 when he was just 3 years old. The School, opened in 1878, became John Rennie School in 1937 and closed or was reorganised between 1951 and 1955. In April 1925 William married Lydia Elsie Hitchman in Wandsworth, London. They were living at 10, Milton Street, Worthing, when William died on 16 August 1937 with Lydia at his side. On the death certificate, although only 34 years old, he is described as "retired". He had been a clerical officer Post Office stores department. The cause of death was pulmonary TB and he was buried at Heene on 19 August. Lydia was left £511 10s 2d in William's will and she continued to live in Milton Street until the mid 1960s but died at 10, Southey Road, Worthing, in July 1971.
