Life story

William Alexander was born to James and Ann in 1870 in Worthing Sussex. He was baptised on 10th July 1870 in Broadwater Church Worthing Sussex. The family lived at 36 Newland Road Worthing where his Father James worked as a House Painter.  William's Mother Ann died in 1872 and his Father married Julia Parmiter on 31st August 1874 Portslade Sussex.

William married Mary Ann Greenfield on 21st May 1893 in Pulborough Sussex. Mary Ann had one child called Clifford Ronald Greenfield born 1891 before she married William. They then had another 3 children Donald William born 1905 died 1981, Gwendoline Gladys born 1907 died 2007, Edgar Alexander Churcher born 1910 died 1977

In 1901 the family were living at 5 Thorley Terrace, Milton Street Worthing Sussex. William's occupation was a bricklayer/builder.  He put in several tenders for work around Worthing, including building a new brick wall for the new pumping station in 1896.

In 1911 the family were still living in Thorley Terrace in Milton road Worthing. By 1928 they had moved to Nirvana no. 1 Milton Road

William died at home on 20th June 1928 after a serious illness. He left £1601 18s 1d  (£73302 in 2020) to his Wife Mary Ann

Mr. W. A. Churcher - Death of a Well-Known Resident - The funeral took place at Heene Cemetery on Saturday of a well known Worthing resident, Mr. W.A. Churcher, builder, who passed away on June 29 after a serious illness, at Nirvana, Milton Road.

Worthing Gazette 20 Oct. 1889 - West Worthing Commissioners monthly meeting -

Paving in Brunswick Road - Tenders for the kering and channelling of the footway on the south side of Brunswick Road at the rear of The Parade, were received as follows: W. Churcher, Milton Street, £301.10s. (which the Clerk said was evidently meant for £31.10s.); W. Churcher, London Street, £32.15s.; and W. Mills, £31.10s. - Mr Mills's tender was accepted.

Worthing Gazette 7 June 1893 - Tender for Sundry Works's

The following tenders for sundry works were submitted to the Highways Committee - Bricklayers work: W. Churcher, 12 per cent off schedule prices; A. Crane, 13; J.G. King, 5. Carpenters work: H.J. Newman, 15 per cent off schedule prices; F.Sandell, net. Plumber's and painter's work: H.J. Newman, 15 per cent off schedule prices; F. Sandell, 10. Blacksmith's work: A. Newman, 71/2 percent, off schedule prices; Paine and Son, 2d. The Committee resolved to recommend to the Council the acceptance of the tender of Mr Crane for bricklayer's work; that of Mr Newman for carpenter's work; that of Mr Sandell for plumber's and painter's work; and that of Messrs. Paine and Son for blacksmith's work.

Worthing Gazette 2 Sept 1896 - Enclosing the Pumping Station

The Committee recommended acceptance of the offer of Mr W.A. Churcher to build, for the sum of £264, a brick and flint wall, 5ft. out of the ground, with red brick piers and coping, in accordance with specification, in order to enclose the land recently purchased of Lieut-Colonel Windes for the pumping station for the new Waterworks.

Donald William Greenfield

Was born in 1906 in Worthing, he married Doris Hamilton in 1930. They had 3 children – Joan A born 1933 East Preston, Barbara A Born 1936 Worthing, Shelia M R born 1944. They lived at no 28 Belvedere Avenue Lancing. Donald died 11th May 1981 at 10 Boundstone Lane Lancing.

Gwendoline Gladys Greenfield

Was born in 1907 in Worthing. She married William James Jones in 1930 East Preston. They had 3 children – Malcolm J Jones born 1931 died 1931 in Worthing, Meryl G born 1934 died 1934 Worthing, Geoffrey W Jones born 1943 died 1944 Worthing. By 1939 they had moved to 205 Darley Avenue, Manchester. William worked as an Aircraft Allocator. Gwendoline died on 24th February 2007 in Ludlow Shropshire

Edgar Alexander Churcher

born 1910 Worthing sussex. In March 1924 Edgar got into trouble with the police when he and some friends were caught kicking a small rubber ball on the esplanade in Worthing, this was against the corporation bye-laws. They were fined a total of 4s. Edgar married Ivy Eileen Carter in September 1930. They had 3 children – Josephine Churcher born 1931 Worthing Sussex, Barrie E Churcher born 1934 East Preston sussex, Jacqueline D Churcher born 1937 Worthing. Edgar was in the RASC as a driver in WW2, but was taken prisoner. After the war in June 1944 Edgar was a lorry driver and he unfortunately knocked over and killed a small child who had run into the road.  An inquest showed that Edgar was in no way to blame. He then became a builder and formed a business with two other men called Rowland Churcher Ltd. Edgar’s Wife Ivy died on 19th June 1975, Edgar died July 1977 in Worthing.

Clifford Ronald Greenfield

Was also known by his step-Father’s surname of Churcher. By 1911 he is living with his parents and working as a Tailor Maker. He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment as a private in WW1 serving in the 12th Battalion and then the 13th battalion after the 12th was disbanded on 8th February 1918. The 13th were also disbanded on the 14th August 1918.  He then joined the 2nd Devon reserves on 26th March 1919. After the war Clifford married Nellie Simmonds in 1923 in Sussex, they had 3 children using the Greenfield surname – Denys G Greenfield  born Dec 1923 East Preston, Beryl J Greenfield born 1927 East Preston, Keith E Greenfield born 1931 East Preston. By 1939 they have moved to 102 Broadwater Street Worthing. Clifford died in 1972 in Worthing .
