Life story

William Burton was born in West Ham, Essex in 1834, he was the eldest of 6 children, he had 1 brother and 4 sisters. He was the son of Isaac Burton, 24yrs, and Mary Ann, 20yrs, nee Payne.    When William was born, his father was employed as a Carman*, later becoming a Wine Porter and then a Wine Cooper. **

William appeared on the 1871 census living in Westminster, employed as a draper's warehouseman and married to Margaret, 36yrs, who was born in India. They had no children and Mary died c1890.

After his wife's death, William lived with his sister, Caroline, in Islington, and after his retirement they moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Addison House, Rowlands Road.

William died, aged 81yrs, on 27th January 1915, probate was granted to a niece, Faith Huneberg, spinster, effects £1414 2s 5d. Value 2022 - £161,500.

*A Carman was a driver of a horse drawn vehicle, often employed by railway companies for local delivery and collection of parcels.

**A Wine Cooper was a person who sampled, bottled and sold wine.
