Life story

Life story

William was born in Broadwater Worthing, the son of Peter Frederick and Sophia. Peter Frederick was a grocer. William moved to London where he worked as a Telegraph Operator for the International Telegraph company but worked in an office for the Foreign Office. He transmitted messages and telegrams for the government. A set sum of money was agreed for the sending of messages between the Government and the International Telegraph Company. In 1866 he was charged with embezzlement of money, he would overcharge for the transmitting of telegrams pocketing the difference. Unfortunately when the accounts did not balance he was questioned and he admitted that he had taken the money. He was sentenced to 9 months hard labour. There is no record of William marrying. William died on 8th January 1883 at 12 Thorns Terrace Worthing of Phthisis (pulmonary Tuberculosis), and was buried on 12th January 1883 at Heene cemetery. His Uncle Henry Green was present at the death, who lived at 12 Graham Road, Worthing.
