Life story

Life story

Walter Garrard was born in Twyford, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, in 1856. He was the son of John Grocher Garrard, 30yrs, Miller, and Martha Jane, 27yrs, nee Langley; he was the third eldest of 11 children.

Walter began his career as an assistant linen draper in Brixton, London, later becoming an agent in wholesale drapery specialising in cotton goods.

On 30 August 1887 Walter married Blanche Rose Downs, at The Parish Church, Chiswick, Middlesex, they set up home in Chiswick and their 2 children were born there, Violet Mary in 1889 and Leonard Downs in 1891. By 1901 they had moved to Willesden, and in 1921 they were living in Mortlake, Richmond, Surrey.

In 1924 Walter and Blanche were resident at 109, Heene Road, Worthing, Walter was then widowed in 1929 and moved back to Surrey, living in Surbiton. He died there, on 1st December 1930, aged 74yrs.

Probate was granted to his daughter, Violet Mary Gaille, effects £685 2s 3d. Value 2022 - £47,500.
