After he left school, he followed in his Father's footsteps and became  a Commercial Traveller specialising in selling hosiery.

Walter married Grace Alma Joy in 1896 in Fulham but unfortunately Grace died 2 years later in 1898.  Then on 30th August 1902 in Barnes Surrey, Walter married Fanny (Queenie) Bird, a spinster born in 1880 to Edward and Celia Bird.

Walter and Fanny had 4 children-

Celia Queenie Elkins born 1903 Richmond Surrey - died 1984 Leicestershire

Phyllis Irene Elkins - born 1907 Barnes Surrey - died 1973 Worthing

Olive Violet Elkins - born 1906 Barnes Surrey - died 1990 Brighton

In 1911 Walter and his family were living at 8 Barnesmead Road, Barnes, Surrey, Walter is still working as a Commercial Traveller in hosiery.

They moved to Worthing in 1922 to set up proprietorship of the Queens Hotel, Heene Terrace, Worthing.

Some years later Walter purchased the Queens Hotel which was incorporated into the St. Ives Hotel, which was next door in Heene Terrace.

Walter died on 8th July 1924 in Worthing and his Wife Fanny continued running the hotel until 1927 when, according to an advert in the Worthing Gazette there was a sale of household furniture and effects.  By 1939 Fanny was living with her Daughter Phyllis and Son-in-Law Amos in Shoreham, Sussex.  It is unknown where and when Fanny died.

There doesn't appear to be a probate record for Walter.
