Her father, Ferdinand Chasemore Gates, was a solicitor and her mother, Alice Marion (Dolly) , was the second daughter of Dr Augustus Collett, a medical officer at Worthing Hospital from 1871. In 1876, Dr Collett built Ashurst Lodge, Liverpool Gardens, where the Montague Centre is now.
