Life story

Life story

Violet was born on 31 January 1897 in Heene and was baptised there on 11 March. Her father, Ferdinand Chasemore Gates, was a solicitor and her mother, Alice Marion (Dolly) , was the second daughter of Dr Augustus Collett, a medical officer at Worthing Hospital from 1871. In 1876, Dr Collett built Ashurst Lodge, Liverpool Gardens, where the Montague Centre is now. At the age of 8, Violet died of appendicitis/peritonitis after 5 days of suffering despite an operation and was buried at Heene on 19 July 1905.
