Life story

Life story

Vere Spencer Rawlinson was born on 11th December 1881 in India to parents Spencer Richard Rawlinson and Eliza Mary Mann. Her parents had married on 12th of February 1877 at Mercara, Madras.

When she was born her father was away on active service. She already had two brothers, Guy Spencer Comyn, who was born on 6th December 1877, and who died on the voyage back from India to Europe aged five, and was buried at sea in the Mediterranean. Her other brother, Claud Roberts, was born on 12th of August 1879 and lived until 1954. He was born in Mangalur, or Mangalore, a city, port and commercial centre on the west coast of the Karnataka State, India.

Her mother died when she was only a year old, and because of the deaths of her mother and brother Vere was sent with bother Claud to live with her grandmother, Jane Philippa Rawlinson, at 8 Lancaster Road, Kensington, London, as her father was still serving in the Far East. She also lived here with her aunt Jane. The household had three domestic servants to help them run the house.

When she was six her father would be awarded the DSO for bravery while serving with the Burma Field Force. Her father retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Southern Command of the Indian Army and died on the 18th of April 1903 at 1 Westbourne Square, Paddington, London.

By 1926, 45-year-old Vere had moved to West Chiltington, near Pulborough. She lived at Harbolets with brother Claud.

By the outbreak of World War II she had moved to Norfolk to Crossways Cottage, Ditchingham. She lived here with retired planter Herbert Mann (a possible realtion on her mothers side) and his wife Beatrice, who volunteered for the ARP. They had a domestic servant and a chauffeur/ servant.

By the time of her death on the 20th of June 1965 she had been living at 3 St. Botolphs Road  Worthing. She left £11,469 to widow Helen Manisty Rawlinson.
