Story
In January 1937, Vera married John Stanley Manford, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Medical Corps. He was about 20 years older and had been married twice before. She was the daughter of George Lewis Woodward, a dairyman and Mary Ellen nee Bennett. Vera was born in Worthing and baptised on 2nd February 1890 at Holy Trinity church. When Vera was a year old, the family were living at 4 Brunswick Road but by 1901, they had moved to 33 Rowlands Road. Vera’s father was a serious rival to the other local dairy businesses of Leal and Fuente. In 1938, Vera and her husband lived at “Jesmond” Petworth Road, Haslemere, Surrey. Jesmond was the name of the parish in Northumberland where John Manford was born. John died at the end of 1945. In 1948, Vera was living in Stanhope Gardens, Kensington. For a time in 1976, Vera lived at Flat 1, 11 Third Avenue, Hove but by the time of her death she was living at 1 Manor Road, Brighton. She left the sum of £54892.
