Life story

Life story

Thomas was born in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, the son of James and Maria. His father was a surgeon and apothecary. Thomas followed in his father's footsteps, receiving his certificate from the Apothecaries Hall on 15 December 1836. On 4th August 1842, Thomas married Elizabeth Burges at Doddington. James Smyth died in 1848 leaving Thomas £2000 and part of his estates. By 1857, Thomas was living in Plymouth. In February 1861, he applied for a passport and went abroad. On 16th April 1862, an announcement appeared in the newspapers that Mr Smyth was selling by auction the contents of his residence, 10 Osborne Place, Plymouth as he was moving to London. Paintings sold included works by Titian and Velasquez. Thomas moved to Oxford Terrace in the Edgware Road and then to Paddington. His wife Elizabeth died on 22nd July 1878. On 18th June 1879, Thomas married a widow Emma Husband at Christ Church, Paddington. Emma died at Paignton on 4th May 1882. Her daughter from her first marriage also called Emma became Thomas's companion. In 1891, the couple were lodging in Worthing at Wynnestead, a large house on the east side of The Steyne. Thomas died in Worthing on 22 Feb 1895. He did not leave a will. His step-daughter Emma was buried with him when she died in 1936.
