Life story

Thomas Parker Smith was born in 1837, he was baptised at Waltham Abbey on 2nd April. His father was Thomas Smith, 44yrs, Butcher, and his mother, Mary Burnet, 23yrs, nee Parker. 

In 1851, Thomas, at 14yrs of age, was the oldest of 6 children, Eliza 12, Henry 10, Alfred 8, Sydney 6, and Burnet 3, the family lived in Brixton. Thomas studied medicine and in 1861 was a house surgeon at Staffordshire County Infirmary. He entered the army as assistant surgeon on 31st March 1862, but after six years' service he retired on half-pay in December 1868. 

William married abroad in the 1870s, his wife, Helen, was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the next 20 years they lived in Reigate and Ealing, and in 1901 they were in Worthing, living at Beauly, Rowlands Road. They had no children. 

William was widowed in 1903 when Helen died in Brighton, aged 60yrs. At some time afterwards, William returned to Reigate where he died, aged 80yrs, on 4th December 1917, at Stanley Cottage, Birkheads Road.  Probate was granted to Sydney Austen, Bank Manager, and the Public Trustee. Effects £5544 6s 7d. Value 2020 - £387K.

The Last Will and Testament for Thomas Parker Smith was dated 3rd December 1912.
