Life story

Life story

Thomas Lowden was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in July 1836; his parents were Joseph Lowden, 33yrs, Bookkeeper, and Margaret, 32yrs, nee Stuart, he was 1 of 9 children. At the age of 14yrs, Thomas was already a bookkeeper, and he had several changes of occupation throughout his working life.

To say that Thomas over stretched himself would be an understatement - at various times he was an accountant, public auditor, debt collector, sharebroker, tea dealer and grocer before being declared bankrupt in 1878 in Dewsbury. A local press report of the case headlined Numerous Irons in the Fire (see below). However, he went on to be a successful engineer becoming managing director of his own firm of mechanical engineers, fitting steam boilers.

On 21st December 1861, Thomas married Hannah Maria Wiseman, 18yrs, at Bradford Cathedral and over the next 20 years they had 10 children. They lived in Liversedge and Kirkleatham, Yorkshire, before moving to Heston, Middlesex, after 1881. They were back in Yorkshire in 1911, and were living at 5, Wensley Road, Harrogate, in 1916, when Hannah died, aged 73yrs, on Christmas day.

In 1921 Thomas and his daughter, Lilian, were living in Worthing, Sussex, at 111, Rowlands Road. Thomas was 84yrs 11months, and still an employer with his engineering business, which was registered at 85, Kirkstall Road, Leeds.

Thomas died in 1929 in Worthing, aged 92yrs, he was buried at Heene Cemetery on 18th May.
