Life story

Life story

Spending most of his life in Yorkshire, Thomas Hay Carr was a cloth manufacturer (mostly wool). His parents were James Carr, a Wesleyan Minister, and Martha Carr, whose maiden  name  was Hay.

He married Sarah Jane Emsley in April 1864 at Hunslet in Yorkshire.

Sir William Emsley Carr
Sir William Emsley Carr

They had 9 children one of whom,  William Emsley Carr, became a newspaper editor, in particular,  a hugely  successful editor of the News of the World for more than fifty years. He also wrote for the Western Mail as its chief political correspondent until the 1930s using his membership of the Parliamentary lobby to obtain stories. He was knighted in 1918 for his wartime work and  admitted to the  Freedom of the City of London in 1922.  An international track running event for men, the Emsley Carr Mile, was named after him in 1953.

Thomas' career was by no means as successful. He was a poor businessman and his partnership with his brother, Henry Lascelles Carr, trading as woollen cloth merchants, was dissolved in 1864.  The Yorkshire Evening Post reported In March 1894 that Thomas Hay Carr appeared in Leeds Bankruptcy Court and  admitted that his assets were nil. He had started his business in 1881 with £70 and had not made a profit during the last 3 years and in fact, had lost £473 18s in 12 months trading and during that period did not contribute a penny towards the maintenance of his wife and family.  Fortunately, his wife, having private means, bought and carried on the business such as it was.  Thomas died on 25 October 1926.
