Life story

Thirza was born in Monkleigh, Devon, one of 13 children. Her father James Risden Newcombe was a farmer, her mother was Betsy Newcombe. Thirza was baptised in the village church on 20th April 1845. By 1871, Thirza was in London, working as a servant for a tobacco merchant. She met Charles Lacey, a grocer, and married him at St Anne's church, Wandsworth on 12th February 1872. The couple settled in Camberwell, where Charles had a grocer's shop in Grove Lane. They had five children of which three reached adulthood. In 1894, the family moved to Worthing, living in Downview Road. Charles became a parish councillor and was also appointed to the Board of Guardians. Thirza arranged the flowers at Heene church and helped at the church fetes. Thirza died at Ravenswood Nursing Home, Parkfield Road, Worthing on 3rd August 1925. Probate was granted on 9th January 1926 to Thirza Elizabeth Powell (wife of Frederick William Powell). Effects £105.
