Life story

Life story

Sydney was born in Saltley, Warwickshire, the son of Richard and Temperance. He was baptised at Duddleston on 23rd January 1884. His father was a rule manufacturer. On 21st May1896, Sydney was baptised for the second time at St Matthew's Church, Duddleston. He was intending to take Holy Orders. Sydney married Clara Ellen Elizabeth Hawkins at Rugby in 1908. Their son Richard was born on 9th April 1909. By 1911, Sydney had his own parish and over the next few years, he was curate at Bedworth and Little Packington in Warwickshire. In 1935, Sydney was Vicar of Coughton and stayed here until retirement in 1951. He and Clara moved to Worthing, living at Ramsey Hall in Byron Road. This was a home for retired clergymen. Clara died in Worthing Hospital on 31st July 1952. Sydney died on 19th March 1969.

Obituary Canon S C Aston.

Canon Sydney Clement Aston, a Canon Emeritus of Coventry Cathedral has died at Worthing. He was 88.

Canon Aston became Curate at Bedworth, Warwickshire, then in the Worcester diocese in 1912. After the restoration of the Coventry diocese in 1918, he held appointments at Coventry, Packington, Coughton and Bishops Pachbrook. He became a Honorary Canon of Coventry Cathedral in 1949 and retired in 1952.

"Retirement of Canon S C Aston"

Canon S C Aston is resigning the living of Bishops Pachbrook as from the end of January and is going to live in retirement on the South Coast.

The greater part of his ministry has been spent in the Coventry diocese to which he came with the late Dr Yeatman Biggs. He was a munitions area chaplain during the 1914-1918 war. Canon Aston has held livings successively in Whyken (where he formed the parish of Stoke Heath), Great and Little Packington and Coughton. He has devoted much energy to the work of the Diocesan Welfare Council in which he held the respective offices of Secretary, Treasurer and Chairman.
