Life story

Susanna Hobson Oke was born to William Samways Oke, 32 yrs. Surgeon and Ann Oke (nee Hobson) 33 yrs. Susanna was baptised on 29th January 1817 at Farnham, Surrey, with her brother, William Samways Oke, jnr. 2yrs, she had an older sister, Ann Fane Oke, 4 yrs. In 1821 another sister, Mary Oke was born. William Samways Oke, Surgeon, was the author of several medical journals. In 1840, Susanna, now known as Susan, 23 yrs. married Reverend George Townsend Warner, 25 yrs., (born 1815 Isle of Wight) on 5th August at All Saints, Southampton. Their first son, George Townsend Warner, jnr. was born in 1841, Southampton, where they lived at Portland Terrace; a daughter, Catherine Susan Oldfield Warner, was born in 1842, London, and another son, William Sidney Oke Warner, was born 1844 in Swansea, where Susan's husband was a Minister at Trinity Church. From 1846 to 1853 Susan and her family lived at Harrow, where George was Classics Master at Harrow school and in 1861, they were in Torquay, Devon, where George again was teaching Classics at a private college. They then moved to Ventnor, I.O.W. where Susan was widowed in 1869 when George died, aged 54yrs. She remained on the I.O.W, before moving a further 3 times, finally to Worthing where she lived with her widowed daughter, at 'Placilla' Landsdowne Road, she died, on 7th March 1906, aged 89yrs. Probate was granted to Catherine Susan Oldfield Sanderson, widow, effects £1792 4s 5d. Value 2019 - £216K.
