Life story

Life story

In 1901, Stephen's parents, Stephen Henry and Mary Hannah Emery, were living at 21, Kean Street, Warrington, Lancashire. Stephen was one of at least eight children. He and his older brother, Thomas Alfred, attended the local National School. By 1911, the family had moved to 114, School Brow, Warrington, and Stephen, aged 16, was a wooden box maker. He married Margaret Evelyn Bone, the daughter of George Augustus Frederick and Bessie Bone, in April 1920. Margaret's parents lived at 7, Thorn Road, Worthing and the marriage was registered at East Preston. Stephen died on 29 November 1926 in Bedford. The Probate notice gives his address as 72, Elstow Road, Bedford and tells us that he died in Bedford County Hospital. Looking back at the electoral registers for the three years or so before Stephen's death , Margaret is not mentioned at the address, but he left his effects of £200 to her.

Positions and secures specified dies in dieholders, using handtools. Lifts coil of wire onto feed reel, tapers end, and threads it through dies. Secures end of wire in jaws of drawing block or onto spool which rotates and pulls wire through dies. Coats wire with lubricant to facilitate drawing and starts machine. Inspects and measures drawn wire to verify conformance to specified shape, size, or electrical resistance, using measuring instruments, for example wire gauges, micrometers, and resistance testers. Cuts defective sections from wire, using wire cutters. Replaces worn dies, using handtools. Records production. May also feed wire through electrodes of annealing unit to soften work-hardened wire. May also weld ends of separate coils together to increase their length, using welding equipment. May also be designated according to experience with particular size and shape of wire drawn or material worked on as Coarse-Wire Drawer (primary industry), Fine-Wire Drawer (primary industry).
