Life story

Life story

Sophia known as Sophie was born in Dawlish, the daughter of Harry Pratt Hatcher and his wife Eliza. She was baptised in Dawlish on 28th December 1875. Her father was a hotel keeper and ran The Albert Hotel in the town. In 1885, the family moved to Worthing and Harry and Eliza took over the running of the West Worthing Hotel (later the Burlington). Sophia died here on 28th March 1886 of heart disease.

Harry and Eliza ran the hotel until 1889 when Harry was declared bankrupt. The following year the family emigrated to Australia. Harry died there in 1926.
