Indian Army died May 12th 1907 aged 90 years "Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" In memory of Sarah Maria the dearly beloved wife of Major Matthew Wood who died 13th Sept 1897 aged 85 years "She is not dead but sleepeth"

Life story

Life story

Sarah was born in Westminster, the daughter of Jeremiah and Sarah of North Cray, Kent. She was baptised at St Margaret's church, Westminster in 1812. Sarah's father was a master carpenter with a house at North Cray and at Great Queen Street in Westminster. He died on 5th May 1838. On 29th May 1839, Sarah married Major Matthew Wood at St Margaret's church, Westminster. The couple travelled to India where Matthew was serving with the Madras Infantry. By 1861, Matthew had retired and returned to England. The couple who had no children lived in Portslade, Sussex before moving to Horsham. By 1881, they had moved to Worthing, living in Heene Terrace. Sarah died on 13th September 1897. Probate was granted on 25th November to Matthew Wood retired Major in Her Majesty's Indian Army and Emmanuel Thomas Herington Esq. Effects £1820 4s 6d.

Matthew died in 1907 and was buried at Heene.
